Shaun Bailey, the Conservatives’ London Mayoral candidate, has become embroiled in a new scandal after it was revealed he had previously stated that young single girls in inner cities deliberately become pregnant in order to secure homes and benefits.
Bailey claimed: “These people are not stupid. If the state offers them money for doing something, they will do it. It is as simple as that.”
Bailey has also come under criticism for comments made about Muslims and Hindus, stating that celebrating Hindu and Muslim traditions has turned Britain into a “crime-ridden cesspool”
This new round of controversy will be difficult to deflect as Bailey has written a full article that is an attack against those in poverty, writing in the Telegraph Bailey said:
any young girl living in the inner city will be clued up on how the system works. They won’t be too careful about not becoming parents. In some cases, they will deliberately become pregnant – as they know that if they do, they will get a flat.”
In 2008 he gave a speech to the Conservative conference saying:
“Girls getting knocked up to get housing? It’s a cottage industry where I come from,”
He also said the state should get away from the idea that it is “acceptable” to be a single mother.
Bailey’s comments will only decrease the chance of him winning the mayoral election which was already going to be an uphill for the relatively unknown assembly member.
